What should I do after I’m injured in a car accident?

There are three crucial steps to take after you have been hurt in a car accident.  Depending on the severity of your accident, the order of these may differ.

  1. Call the police. If you have been in an accident where you believe someone was injured, you should request police response.  The police will fill out a report that states the circumstances of you accident and contains all of the relevant information about the parties.
  2. Seek medical attention.  Sometimes, if your injuries are severe, you are unable to seek police assistance, and you are transported to a medical facility.  In these situations, usually the medical responders, a witness, or a passenger will call the police while your injuries are being tended to.  If you are not taken for emergency medical care, you should still see a doctor as soon as possible after your accident to get medical attention.
  3. Hire an attorney and notify your insurance company. If you hire an attorney as soon as possible after the accident, they will make sure the insurance company is notified of your accident.  However, you can also give notice of your claim to the insurance company yourself, but make sure you refrain from making any statements of liability about your accident.
