4 Car Manufacturers Settle Takata Airbag Claims for $553 Million
October 27, 2017 • Auto Accidents
Toyota, Subaru, Mazda, and BMW settled a lawsuit with current and former owners and lessees of their vehicles for $553 Million. This settlement is to address problems with airbags manufactured by the Takata Corporation. Reportedly, the settlement will compensate people in a variety to ways, “from providing rental cars to those who are deemed to be at the greatest risk to ‘a possible residual distribution payment of up to $500.'”
Further, under the terms of the settlement, the four affected car manufacturers are to bolster their outreach campaigns to owners and lessees of cars affected by the defective Takata airbags. At present, Toyota has completed roughly one-third of the recall work and BMW has completed only 16% of the required recall repair work.
This settlement is separate from other pending litigation regarding personal injuries and wrongful death claims. There are a number of lawsuits that arose from the defective airbags exploding, which sprayed shrapnel at drivers and passengers upon deployment. The defective Takata airbags have been linked to at least 16 deaths.
Vehicles made by 19 different automakers have been recalled to replace frontal airbags on the driver’s side or passenger’s side, or both. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has called the Takata airbag recall “the largest and most complex safety recall in U.S. history.”
